Coffee cup reading was started by the Arabs at around 600 A.D. Later on, it was learnt and practiced by women from various parts of the world including Greece, Russia, Yugoslavia and also India. Consistency in interpretations was seen across all the cultures regarding the same symbols.
Usually the coffee used for this art is ground Turkish coffee. After the coffee is drunk, the residue is shaken inside the cup and turned over in the saucer and left to dry for sometime and then the fortune is read out.
One point that must be taken into account is that one should drink the coffee in a hurry or without the intention of having it read by the seer. One should be in a reflexive and thoughtful mood while drinking so that meaningful insight into the future can be garnered.
The art of coffee cup reading is very ancient and at the same time it is mostly hereditary. It has been recorded through the experiences of many coffee cup readers that they have been taught by their mothers who in turn were taught by their grandmothers.
Over cultures and over countries some common coffee cup readings that were seen to be consistent are the closed circle (signifying staring of a family or marriage), the cat (signifying troubles or obstacles), the closed circle with a dot in the middle (signifying having children), the tree, lines (journey) and many other such symbols which keep on coming up on almost everyone’s cup.
Though not much common in India but it is a poplar science for prediction in the West. There are coffee parties specifically held to predict what the future beholds. Even many chefs are said to preserve their coffee cups to know what their future holds for them.
Though it is said that coffee for the coffee cup readings should be of Ground Turkish Coffee, but it has been seen that even espresso or cappuccino does the trick. They might not be very accurate as the coffee strains are not that prominent as ground Turkish coffee but nevertheless they help in having a vague idea about the future.
